Yes, I Am a Taphophile.

Those that know me well know how much I love cemeteries. Not just any cemetery either, but the old ones with the large upright headstones. I love to read the old names and inscriptions and imagine what their lives might have been like. I enjoy finding a nice cemetery that I can go relax in and read a book or do a little writing in my journal. Most of the time they’re completely empty, so it’s a place I feel I can have all to myself and I won’t be disturbed. Well, there was that persistent gravedigger who kept bugging me and brought me chocolates, but I doubt that will ever happen again.  Usually I can forget about the world when I’m in one of these lovely locations and just be me. They’re also a really good place for a walk.

One of my favorite things to do in a cemetery is take photos. The older and more decrepit the headstones and statues are, the better. Moss covered epitaphs and cracked angels are beautiful to me. And cemeteries in the snow are especially beautiful! I’ll have to dig out some of my older photos and post them someday, but for now these were taken in a cemetery that we stumbled across in Palo Alto, CA.

That’s what I want my headstone to say. “She hath done what she could.” lol

  2. Great pictures! My dad does stone engraving and our house yard used to be full of grave stones ready for engraving. My friends used to find it scary :) but I never though it was, I wouldn’t even notice all these stones after a while :) Probably cemetery is a very peaceful place to read a book!

    • I think that’s cool that your dad does that for a living. That has to be a pretty interesting job.

  3. Very dangerous to health though, because of the stone dust. I tried once and it really is a hard job, but a good business :)
